Hebrews 3:1-11

Image
Hebrews 3:1-11 points out that Jesus is greater than Moses and worthy of greater glory:   Moses was a member of God's house, Jesus is the builder. Moses was a faithful servant, Jesus is the Son. Moses testified of things to come, Jesus fulfills the testimony. The quotation from Psalm 95:7-11 warns against being like the Israelites who, with hardened hearts, rebelled against God in the wilderness and failed to enter God's rest. Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when studying this passage: Verses 1-6 What helps me to better fix my thoughts on Jesus? [NOTE: The word for "fix my thoughts on" can also be translated consider, take note of, think deeply about, reflect on, ponder, perceive, observe, or set my focus on] As the contrast between Jesus and Moses reminds us to rest in the gift of salvation by grace through faith rather than relying on works of the Law, are there times when I place too much emphasis on my own good works? Verses 7-1...

Hebrews 2:10-18

Hebrews 2:10-18 emphasizes that Jesus became "flesh and blood" (v. 14) to provide the way to salvation through His suffering, taking the punishment for our sins and making peace with God. The quotations from Psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:17-18 point to Christ's identification with us, fully sharing in our humanity. Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when studying this passage: Verses 10-13 What does Christ's suffering teach me about how God can use suffering for my good and His purposes? Verses 14-18 In what ways does Christ help me through temptation and set me free from the things that hold me captive?

Hebrews 2:1-9

Image
Hebrews 2:1-9 begins with a warning against drifting away from the message of salvation. Then, the quotation from Psalm 8:4-6 supports the point that, through His death on the cross and His reign, Christ restores man's God-given calling to exercise dominion over creation, which was lost through sin. Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when studying this passage: Verses 1-4 What "anchors" can help me avoid spiritual drifting when I am pulled by the tides and currents of this world? Verses 5-9 How can I have hope in the midst of the brokenness I see in this present world? For music inspired by this Scripture passage, following is a link to a YouTube video: "What is Man?" Hebrews 1:4-14

Image
Hebrews 1:4-14 continues the theme of Hebrews that Christ is greater than all. A series of quotes from the Old Testament emphasizes that Christ is greater than the angels because He is the only begotten Son (Psalm 2:7; 2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chronicles 17:13), is worthy of all worship (Psalm 97:7; Deuteronomy 32:43), and reigns forever in righteousness over all creation (Psalm 104:4; Psalm 45:6-7; Psalm 102:25-27; Psalm 110:1). Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when studying this passage: Verses 4-14 How does knowing that Christ sends His angels to minister to His people encourage me? How does the author's use of Scripture encourage me to turn to God's Word when I struggle with doubt?
