Deuteronomy 25:1-10

Deuteronomy 25:1-10 give instructions on humane justice, considerate treatment of animals, and the practice of levirate marriage to preserve family lineage.

  • Verses 1-3
    • How does God show mercy and compassion to me, even when I am guilty?
  • Verse 4
    • The apostle Paul applied this verse in 1 Corinthians 9:9 and 1 Timothy 5:18 to share with those who labor in ministry.  In what ways might we enjoy the fruit of our labors for the Kingdom of God?
  • Verses 5-10
    • Levirate marriage was beautifully applied in Ruth 4:1-17 but legalistically used by the Sadducees to test Jesus in Matthew 22:24, Mark 12:19, and Luke 20:28.  How do I view God's laws, and how does that affect the way I apply them in my life?

Psalm 1

     Psalm 1 can be considered an introduction to the Book of Psalms, reflecting a theme common to Wisdom literature:  righteous living leads to life and blessings, in contrast to wicked living which leads to destruction and curses.  Verse 2 is a key verse focusing on meditating day and night on God's Word. (NOTE: "the law of the LORD" is "Torah," which can specifically refer to the Pentateuch, but more generally to God's instructions and thus, to what He has revealed in His Word)   To "meditate" is to mutter, contemplate, and ponder, so that God's Word enters our hearts and minds; and is then lived out in our actions.   It is like chewing and digesting, in order to internalize, nourish, and then bear fruit. Deuteronomy 4:32-49

  Deuteronomy 4:32-49 lead into the main body of Deuteronomy, where the Law is reviewed in chapters 5-28.  The people are reminded that none can compare with the LORD their God.  As a fitting response , they are encouraged to follow God's Law that it may go well with them in the Promised Land.  Moses leads by example, obeying God's command to set apart cities of refuge in the conquered Transjordan region; though the remaining cities of refuge were to be established after taking possession of the Promised Land (ref. Numbers 35:9-34). The same Law that was given to the first generation is now to be reviewed during this pivotal transition into the Promised Land.
