Psalm 10

 

 

The psalmist, in verse 1, felt as if God was far away and hidden, because of the arrogance and oppressive actions of the wicked that he describes in verses 2-11.  So, he prays for God to take action in verses 12-15; and he closes in praise in verses 16-18; because he recognizes that God indeed hears the cries of the afflicted, and that He will justly judge the wicked and their actions.

Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when meditating on this psalm:

  • Verse 1
    • When are times in which I have felt like God was far away or hidden?
    • How can this psalm help me to gain the right perspective on God and my situations?
  • Verses 2-11
    • How does the psalmist describe the wicked?
    • Verses 4, 6, and 11 show that God does know what the wicked think in their hearts; yet the wicked are mistaken in thinking that God "has hidden his face."  Is it possible that in verse 1, when the psalmist thought God was "hidden," that the psalmist was being influenced by what the wicked were expressing?   Are there times when I have allowed the thoughts of this world to negatively influence my perspective?
  • Verses 12-15
    • Take some time to pray to God about what we see happening in the world around us.
  • Verses 16-18
    • The psalmist ended the psalm praising God, because through prayer and reflection, he was able to see the truth and gain the right perspective about God.   What Scriptures do I need to turn to, in order to gain the right perspective regarding anything that might be troubling me at this time?

Psalm 120

  Psalm 120 is the first in the Songs of Ascents series (Psalms 120-134). These songs were likely sung during the three annual festival processions to Jerusalem (Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles). The Feasts may typically be associated with joy, celebration, and worship, however in Psalm 120, the psalmist is crying out to the LORD in distress.  He is facing lies and deceit, such as from those in the foreign lands around him who hate peace. Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when meditating on this psalm: Verses 1-4 Why would it be better to turn to the LORD when facing "lying lips" and "a deceitful tongue"? Verses 5-7 What can we do when we live "among those who hate peace"? Psalm 142

  Psalm 142 is in the last set of those attributed to David (138-145). This is a cave psalm (like Psalm 57), likely when David was fleeing from Saul and hid in a cave when his life was in danger. Thus, this is a prayer, crying out to the LORD for deliverance.
