Deuteronomy 10:12-22 review Israel's requirements in the re-established covenant.  While circumcision is a sign of the covenant, the emphasis is on the circumcision of the heart. Israel is privileged to be in a covenant relationship with the Creator, the God of gods, the Lord of lords, who is great, mighty, awesome, impartial, just, loving, and praiseworthy.

Following are some reflections that may be beneficial to consider when studying this passage:

  • Verses 12-13
    • How should God's people live? (Note the verbs used: fear, walk, love, serve, keep.)
  • Verses 14-16
    • God established circumcision as the sign of the covenant (see Genesis 17:9-14).  However, like verses 14-16, Romans 2:25-29 emphasize the circumcision of the heart. What does "circumcision is a matter of the heart" mean for me?
  • Verses 17-22
    • What do these verses reveal about my covenant-keeping LORD?

Psalm 1

     Psalm 1 can be considered an introduction to the Book of Psalms, reflecting a theme common to Wisdom literature:  righteous living leads to life and blessings, in contrast to wicked living which leads to destruction and curses.  Verse 2 is a key verse focusing on meditating day and night on God's Word. (NOTE: "the law of the LORD" is "Torah," which can specifically refer to the Pentateuch, but more generally to God's instructions and thus, to what He has revealed in His Word)   To "meditate" is to mutter, contemplate, and ponder, so that God's Word enters our hearts and minds; and is then lived out in our actions.   It is like chewing and digesting, in order to internalize, nourish, and then bear fruit. Book of Psalms Review and Summary

  The Book of Psalms is a beloved collection of 150 psalms grouped into five books:  Book I (1-41), II (42-72), III (73-89), IV (90-106), and V (107-150).  Some have considered parallels between these and the Pentateuch (i.e., Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy): Book I begins the psalms and introduces the overall theme of wisdom literature that the righteous are blessed but the wicked will receive judgment.  God is typically referred to as the Covenant LORD . Book II focuses on deliverance , particularly God's deliverance of David from his enemies.  God is often referred to as Elohim, Almighty God . Book III includes psalms of community worship and laments.  Many of these psalms are written by Levitical worship leaders such as Asaph or the Sons of Korah.
